This still life is unique in Whistler's etched oeuvre. etching. It was made towards the end of 1858 when he was returned from making The French Set. Whistler stayed in London with his sister, Deborah, and brother-in-law, Sir Francis Seymour Haden. Over two months he and Haden worked closely together at the latter's house in Sloane Street, where Haden had installed an etching press. Haden also made an etching of a wine glass, and another of the cup and saucer that appear in Reading by Lamplight.
