Gavarni also known as Self Portrait with a Cigarette. 1842. Lithograph on chine-colle on wove paper. Armelhaut et Bocher 34. Chine size: 9 x 6 1/4 inches. Printed by Bertauts, Paris. Chine size: 9 x 6 1/4 inches. Signed/titled in the stone. 500.
The lithograph is based upon a drawing in the Bibliotheque National. The artist, age 38, wears a velvet jacket and holds a cigarette.
In his self-portraits, Paul Gavarni isn't trying to project grand status, theatrical flair, or the romanticized persona of the bohemian artist that many of his contemporaries favored. Instead, through his characteristically sharp draftsmanship, he seems to be telling the viewer a few quiet, honest things about himself:
He is an observer first, the observed second: Even when turning the mirror on his own face, he maintains the detached, analytical eye of a keen sociologist. He presents himself not as a performer, but as a quiet, thoughtful witness to human nature.
