Schneiderman, in his catalogue of Meryon's etching, writes, "Burty wrote the first catalogue of Meryon's etchings. He states that this was the first of the series executed by Meryon and that he used the chambre claire. The first sketch was made with the aid of a camera lucida, but Meryon had to rework the design completely. There are two graphite sketches on thin Japan paper; one shows the complete scene and is inscribed on the mount, 'pris àla Chambre Claire', and on the second, at the Art Institute of Chicago, is a sketch of the view under the arch."
