Philip Gilbert Hamerton wrote "With the exception of one plate by Claude, this is the finest etching of a landscape subject that has ever been executed in the world." Philippe Burty (1830-1890) was a French critic, collector and etcher. Burty, who began his career studying drawing and painting, became art critic of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts in 1859. central figure in the etching revival. He was a founder-member of the Sociéé des Aquafortistes in 1862, and knew many etchers. He was an early supporter of Haden's etched work.
