The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes represents one of the finest collaborative efforts by two master artists in the history of the Japanese woodcut. The 'two brushes' were Hiroshige and Kunisada, who worked on this series of 53 prints from 1854 through 1857. Hiroshige and Kunisada were close companions and had worked together on various single sheet compositions before. Kunisada in fact was chosen to make Hiroshige's memorial portrait woodcut upon his death in 1858. For each print in this spectacular series, Hiroshige created the landscapes and Kunisada designed the figures in the foreground.
