Thomas Scofield Handforth was an American artist and etcher. He was born September 16, 1897, in Tacoma, WA. He studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts (1920–1922), and the University of Washington (1915–1916). He wrote and illustrated the children's picture book Mei Li based on personal experience in China. Awards: Caldecott Medal, Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Arts, US & Canada
