Madonna and Child. c. 1933. Tempera on paper. 16 1/4 x 12. Gift from Ada Bethune to the Catholic Lending Library of Hartford. Some flaking of the gold leaf on the halo, commensurate with age. Unsigned, as usual. Housed in a classic 24 1/2 x 19-inch gold frame with a silk mat and a liner. $1,750.
In 1919 Hagreen was living in Shower Row, Shaftesbury, Dorset. He came to Ditchling in 1922 to work with Eric Gill in the Ditchling community of artists. He initially trained under Norman Garstin and Harold and Laura Knight in Cornwall. Hagreen was a founder member of the Society of Wood Engravers and a fellow artist with Eric Gill at Ditchling and Capel-Y-Ffin.
