The etching shows a view of the Thames at Battersea from the window of Whistler's house. Francis Seymour Haden was related to Whistler through marriage to Whistler's half-sister Deborah and at this time the two artists visited one another regularly. A hot air balloon can be seen flying over Battersea railway bridge in the distance.
