A professional soldier, he joined the army when he was eighteen and retired from the Coldstream Guards in 1878. After that time, Goff both etched and painted many views in both England and Continental Europe. He was elected to the Royal Soceity of Painter Engravers as well as becoming an honourary member of the academies of Milan and Florence. Goff's art was regularly exhibited at major institutions, such as the Royal Academy, London. Today the etchings of Robert Goff are included in many British and American collections, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum, London.
