Honoré-Victorin Daumier was a prolific French caricaturist, painter, and sculptor especially renowned for his cartoons and drawings satirizing 19th-century French politics and society In 1830 Daumier began his satirical work, lampooning contemporariesin his sculptures and his many lithographs. At this time, Charles Philipon, a liberal journalist who had founded the opposition journal La Caricature, invited him to become a contributor. Philipon was the owner of the largest printing house in Paris equipped with lithographic presses, and used them to print La Caricature and Le Charivari, another illustrated paper. When a tightening of censorship in 1835 put an end to La Caricature, Daumier shifted to politically unobjectionable social satire for Philipon's other journal, Le Cbarivari. In hundreds of lithographs, Daumie's character types were universal: businessmen, lawyers, doctors, professors, and petits bourgeois.
