Steward wrote, "It is revealing of Brockhurst's technique to study the handling of the shoulders and clothes in this study. Brockhurst has used a basic pattern of vertical lines - sometimes broken, sometimes continuous. The density of the shadows is then created not by a similar cross hatching but rather by a series of diagonal almost dot-like strokes. The same etchnique is continued into the background to express the shadows beyond the figure."
