André Bouquet was a French naive artist born in La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire in 1897. Recognition for Bouquet was slow in coming. He first displayed his works publicly in a Paris cafe in Villeneuve Saint-Georges at the age of 46. Bouquet had moved to a small apartment in this Parisian suburb in 1933, and resided there the rest of his life.
Bouquet waited eight more years for his first exhibition in Paris. Since then his work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in France and worldwide. UNESCO and UNICEF have commissioned Bouquet to create artwork that appears on their greeting cards. In France the artist is included in the International Museum of Naive Art near Versailles, the Museum of Laval, and the International Museum of Naive Art. Bouquet’s work has been exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris and the Salon des Independents where he was guest of honor.
